Chart types

Bubble map

A circle on each region, its area set by the value. The clearest way to compare totals such as population, GDP or cases.

Best for: Totals and counts

Pie chart map

A pie or donut on each region showing how a whole splits into parts, like vote shares or the energy mix.

Best for: Shares of a whole

Bar chart map

Small bars side by side on each region, to compare a few values or years in place.

Best for: Comparing 2–5 values

Flow map

Curved arrows between places, their width set by the amount: migration, trade, travel or shipments.

Best for: Movement between places

Side charts

Add a ranked bar chart, a stacked bar chart or a histogram next to any map, including plain colour-by-data maps. It is part of every download, share page and embed.

Questions

What is a map chart?

A map chart puts numbers on a map: bubbles sized by a value, a pie or bars for each region, or arrows for movements between places. Unlike a coloured (choropleth) map, sizes are compared directly, so large and small regions are judged fairly.

What data do I need?

A table with one row per region: a name or code (ISO codes, postal codes and common spellings work) and one or more number columns. For a flow map, use three columns: from, to and an amount. Paste it, upload CSV or Excel, or link a Google Sheet.

Can I colour regions and add a chart at the same time?

Yes. Region colours, patterns, labels and the colour-by-data scale stay underneath the chart, so you can show two measures on one map, for example income as colour and population as bubbles.

How do I share my chart in the community gallery?

Create a free account, save the chart and tick “Show in the public gallery”. It is listed under Charts in the gallery, gets its own page with the data table, and can be liked, remixed, commented on and embedded.

Is the MapBun chart maker free?

Yes. Making, downloading (PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF) and publishing map charts is free. Downloads carry a small credit.
